YOU DON'T NEED A HARD RESET EVEN. I CAN CONFIRM, ALL I DID WAS THIS:

press HOME, and bring up the dialer. Dial *#*#4636#*#* (Do not press "Call"). After a second, it should bring up the "Testing" menu.

Go into Phone Information, press MENU, and tap "select radio band." You should experience a Force Close, don't panic, this was supposed to happen. Scrolling down shows that the preferred network type is GSM auto (prl).

What this means is that even though you are connected to a CDMA network, your phone is trying to find a GSM network, preventing the radio from sleeping, and causing excessive battery drain.

Remedy this by tapping GSM auto (prl), and changing it to CDMA auto (prl).

Now your done, your TWS should drop dramatically, and you should experience much better battery life!

Remodeling a house to make it safer and more user-friendly can run to tens of thousands of dollars. But I’ve found clever ways to improve and update your home without spending much...

THROUGHOUT THE HOME

Replace round doorknobs, which are difficult to grasp and turn, with lever-style handles that you push down to open. Most of the time, the lever handles can be attached to the existing latch mechanism already on the door. You can do the job yourself with just a screwdriver. Also, consider replacing cabinet door and drawer knobs with easy-to-grasp C- or D-shaped handles.

Cost: About $25/lever and $5/handle. Available at home-improvement centers.

Switch to rocker light switches. They are on/off switches that rock back and forth when pressed. They are larger and easier to operate, and many people find them more attractive than the standard, small flip switches used in most homes. Rocker switches let you turn on a light with your elbow or fist if you’re entering a room when your hands are full, and they’re easier to find in the dark.

Cost: About $3 per light switch. Available at home-improvement centers.

Raise the position of some electrical outlets. Wall outlets that are close to the floor can be hard to reach and inconvenient for plugging in appliances that you use intermittently, such as vacuums, heating pads and chargers for phones and laptops. Use those low outlets for lamps and other devices that you rarely unplug. Hire an electrician to raise other outlets at least 27 inches off the floor. They’ll still be inconspicuous but much more accessible.

Cost: Typically $250 and up to move half a dozen outlets.

Use remote controls for more than TVs. They can operate window coverings, such as drapes and blinds, so you avoid stretching and straining, and let you control interior and exterior lights from your car or from within the home to prevent you from tripping in the dark. My favorite: Lutron AuroRa (888-588-7661, www.lutron.com/products/wholehomecontrols).

Cost: The AuroRa entry system starts at around $800 and provides wireless house-lighting control for up to five dimmers that can be operated from the car or the bedside. Online retailers, such as Home Depot and Amazon, offer it at a significant discount.

Create "wider" doorways. Residential building codes and home builders don’t consider the needs of older people who may need more than the standard 32-inch doorway, especially if they use a wheelchair or walker. Actually widening a doorway can be expensive and impractical, especially if it’s along a weight-bearing wall.

Instead: Replace your standard door hinges with expandable "offset" hinges. These special hinges allow the door to close normally. But upon opening, they swing the door clear of the door frame by an extra two inches. This lets you use the entire width of the doorway when you enter or exit.
Cost: About $20 for a set of two door hinges. Available at home-improvement stores. A handy person can install these hinges because they fit in the existing holes in your door frame. Otherwise, a carpenter will charge about $100/hour.

Add a second handrail to staircases. It’s easier and safer to climb and descend when you can use both hands. Adding an extra handrail is an inexpensive and easy way to increase safety. Make sure both handrails are at the same height and between 30 and 34 inches above the front edge of the step. Also, for maximum safety, handrails should extend about six inches beyond the top and bottom steps if possible.

Cost: About $85 to $250 for each new handrail plus carpenter installation. Available at home-improvement stores.

KITCHEN

Lower your microwave. Many home builders, contractors and home owners like to save space by mounting microwave ovens above the stove or high on a wall. This position is hazardous because it requires you to reach above your head to get hot foods or forces you to balance on a stool.

Better: If your existing microwave is on the wall, build a shelf under it where you can rest hot foods after they finish cooking. Or choose a new model with a tray feature that slides out and is easier to reach.
Example: The Sharp Insight Pro Microwave Drawer Oven installs just beneath your countertop. The entire oven slides open, drawer-style, giving you access to the cooking compartment from above.
Cost: About $650 to $850 for the microwave and $150 and up for carpenter installation.

Install a pullout kitchen faucet. Lugging heavy pots of water to the stove can be difficult and even dangerous. Many plumbing manufacturers now offer kitchen faucets featuring high-arc, pullout spouts. You can remove the spout and use it as a sprayer hose to fill pots within three to five feet of the stove.

Cost: About $150 plus plumber installation. Available at home-improvement stores.

Install a pull-down shelving system inside your kitchen wall cabinets. Top shelves in cabinets are difficult to reach. This simple device rests in your upper cabinet until you grab a handle on the shelf frame. A set of three or four shelves swings out of the cabinet and down toward you. The shelves lock in place so you can get the item you need. Afterward, the whole unit swings back into place.

My favorite: Rev-A-Shelf’s chrome pull-down shelving system for 24- and 36-inch cabinets. You can do the installation yourself. Cost: About $300 (800-626-1126, www.rev-a-shelf.com).

BATHROOM

Add upscale grab bars near toilets and tubs. Some people have avoided installing grab bars in their bathrooms because they look too institutional. Now, there are much more attractive versions. Brushed nickel or oil-rubbed bronze grab bars by Moen are designed to match other Moen bath accessories and faucets for a coordinated look. The grab bars meet all federal government guidelines. They have a stainless steel core and are 1¼ inches in diameter, making them easy to hold.

Cost: About $25 to $70 for the bar. Available at home-improvement stores. You can install them yourself, but it requires drilling holes in the wall.

MILWAUKEE – Here's a way you might save $20 this year: Change the font in the documents you print.

Because different fonts require different amounts of ink to print, you could be buying new printer cartridges less often if you wrote in, say, Century Gothic rather than Arial. Schools and businesses could save thousands of dollars with font changes.

Data on the subject from Printer.com, a Dutch company that evaluates printer attributes, persuaded the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay to make a switch. Diane Blohowiak, coordinator of information-technology user support, has asked faculty and staff to use Century Gothic for all printed documents. The school also plans to change its e-mail system so it uses Century Gothic.

"The feedback we've gotten so far has been positive," she said. "Century Gothic is very readable."

The school of 6,500 students spends about $100,000 per year on ink and toner cartridges. Although students and staff can change the default font to something more ink-intensive, Blohowiak said the university expects to save $5,000 to $10,000 per year with the font switch.

When Printer.com tested popular fonts for their ink-friendly ways, Century Gothic and Times New Roman topped the list. Calibri, Verdana, Arial and Sans Serif were next, followed by Trebuchet, Tahoma and Franklin Gothic Medium. Century Gothic uses about 30 percent less ink than Arial.

The amount of ink a font drains is mainly driven by the thickness of its lines. A font with "narrow" or "light" in its name is usually better than its "bold" or "black" counterpart, said Thom Brown, an ink researcher at Hewlett-Packard Co., the world's top maker of printers.

Also, serif fonts — those with short horizontal lines at the top and bottom of characters — tend to use thinner lines and thus less ink than a "sans serif" counterpart.

But while using less ink at home can help you buy roughly one fewer printer cartridge each year, it's not necessarily better for the environment.

That's because some fonts that use less ink, including Century Gothic, are also wider. A document that's one page in Arial could extend to a second page if printed in Century Gothic. Blohowiak said her research suggests that ink comprises the main cost of a printout, but the environmental costs of paper are probably higher.

"Maybe the individual characters use less ink, but if you're using more paper, that's not so green, is it?" said Allan Haley, director of "words and letters" at Monotype Imaging Inc. in Woburn, Mass., which developed Century Gothic.

Also, Century Gothic was designed for limited blocks of text such as titles and headlines, not for full documents, said Haley, who describes fonts as his "children." Despite Printer.com's research and UW-Green Bay's experience, Haley said he still recommends Times New Roman or Arial for their readability.

The standard advice for trimming printing expenses still applies: Print in "draft mode," if you can. Use both sides of a page and do a print preview to make sure you're not printing pages with useless text such as a copyright line. Using an ink-saving font is just one more technique to consider.

And the greenest way to save on ink is not to print at all.

That's the philosophy Microsoft Corp. said it uses in deciding which fonts to include in its Outlook and Word applications. The more pleasing a font looks on the screen, the less tempted someone will be to print, said Simon Daniels, a program manager for Microsoft's typography group.

That's why the company changed its defaults in Office 2007 from Arial and Times New Roman to Calibri and Cambria, he said.

"We're trying to move the threshold of when people hit the print button," he said.

Password protecting your Excel worksheet can prevent others from tampering with your data, but it can also be a great way to protect your other passwords as well. When using Microsoft Excel, there are many ways that you can password protect

your spreadsheet.

One of the first and easiest methods is to password protect the entire sheet or workbook. To do this in Microsoft Excel 2007, first go to the Review tab and then click on Protect Sheet or Protect Workbook.

When a pop-up window appears, select your options and type in the desired password. Your password can be something crazy, that no one would ever suspect (like 45pQ93S21!). In order to remember your password, copy it into a different workbook for safe keeping.

Create a new file, just to store your passwords. You can name this file anything you want, but it would probably be safer to name it something mundane – like HistoricalStockPrices.xls – instead of something that screams “open me” like ListOfMyPasswords.xls. In this new file, create your password list that you can then refer to whenever you want to open a document.

Next, password protect the entire workbook. To do this, click on File, then Save As. When the file-save window appears, type in your file name, then select the Tools drop down menu. From that menu, select General Options.

This will enable you to password protect the entire workbook and prevent anyone else from opening it and viewing its contents. For this password – remember to use one that you will remember. There is no easy way to retrieve a lost Excel password, so make this one something unique that you won’t forget.

Now, whenever you want to open that file, you will first see a screen like the one below asking for your password. This will enable you to protect all of your passwords and never forget them.

Useful Tip: Creating a password file can be especially useful if you are required to frequently change your password at work and always have trouble remembering the new password.

Summary of Simple Steps To Protect Your Work

1. Protect your sheets using the “Protect Workbook” button and a crazy password that can’t easily be guessed.

2. Store all your passwords in one sheet so that you’ll remember them. Password protect the entire sheet when you save it by using the Tools – General Options functionality. For this password, use something that you will remember.

9. Public health officials are irresponsible in their omission of any ways to strengthen immunity against the flu. (CNN) -- If you cross paths with Lorenzo Geraci and want to exchange contact information with him, he's only giving you two options -- and neither involves a business card.

For personal contacts, Geraci uses Facebook. For business, he prefers LinkedIn, the professional networking site. Geraci started his "no business card" experiment in December, and while he thinks he made the right decision, his policy does present its challenges.

"Not everybody likes it, that's for sure," said the Boston, Massachusetts-area consulting CFO for Internet startups. "Not using business cards will negatively affect the quantity of your contacts -- there are those who come up to you and want to contact you but aren't Internet savvy -- but it doesn't affect the quality."

While exchanging business cards remains standard protocol among many executives and nobody believes paper cards will become extinct anytime soon, more professionals are also opting for Web-based services or "digital business cards."

If you've ever attended a conference and searched your pocket or shoulder bag in vain for an inscribed paper rectangle, you can see the value in sharing contact information online or via cell phones, where it's almost always easily accessible.

"In reality, people get a [business] card and don't do anything with them," said Adam Ostrow, editor-in-chief of Mashable, a blog devoted to social media. "There's a big opportunity to change that behavior and make networking more productive with technology."

There are now more than 20 products and services that allow people to exchange versions of electronic business cards. For now, however, Ostrow believes old-fashioned cards are still the best way to do business.

"What's come out so far requires the users to be on the same platform," he said. "At this point it's hard to see the business card dying until something [standard] comes out to replace it."

John Saddington, an Atlanta, Georgia, social computing consultant, is trying a compromise. His business card contains only a Google search box with his name in it; people who search for him on Google are led to his Web site, where they can contact him through e-mail or his LinkedIn profile.

"It's just as important to be effective in the real world as it is on the online world," Saddington said. "The first thing that happens when I hand it to people is that they laugh. They may assume that I'm arrogant, but if they know me at all, they know that this is my world and nothing is more tech-heavy than Google."

DubMeNow also can locate where and when you met your contact, in case you have a memory lapse.

For the budding entrepreneur

The Web site BusinessCard2 lets you create an online card with a distinctly professional spin. The card's skin is sleek and has three tabs to help potential customers get to know you and your business. There's an info tab where you can list your experience and another tab for listing your social networks. BusinessCard2 also can embed your business card link in e-mail messages or on your blog.

For the frequent conference attendee

You, professional person with a stack of other people's business cards you never use, are the reason digital business cards exist in the first place. The Art of Getting to Any Decision Maker

Stop talking like a salesperson and start talking with authority.

If you're selling business-to-business, don't you want a meeting with the most powerful CEOs? Imagine sitting in front of your dream prospect who has the ability to hand over a seven-figure check before you leave his office.

That's why I learned to get around gatekeepers. Ultimately, I was able to reach the following executives on the telephone (some are not in these positions anymore, but they were when I got to them):

Michael Eisner at Disney

George Zimmer of the Men's Wearhouse

David Pottruck, CEO of Charles Schwab

Phil Purcell, CEO of Morgan Stanley

Carl Reichardt, Chairman of Wells Fargo Bank

Alan Horn, COO of Warner Bros.

How do you get through?

Your voice has to sound like you're important. The dead giveaway that you are selling something is when you try to be charming to the assistant. I got the chairman of Wells Fargo Bank on the telephone by calling him with a very authoritative voice and saying: "Hi. This is Chet Holmes. Is Carl in?" To my utter delight, he called me back.

Who calls CEOs of the largest companies in the world? Very important people. If your voice is authoritative and you tell-not ask-the assistant what to do, you are likely to get through.

The other secret to getting that top executive on the telephone is to send the gatekeeper back as many times as possible, each time giving very little information. Let me show you the difference between a weak and strong salesperson.

A weak salesperson:

You: How are you today?

Assistant: Good.

You: Is Mr. Smith in?

Assistant: Who's calling?

You: This is Bill Johnston.

Assistant: May I ask what this call is in reference to?

You: I'm calling to talk about my product.

Assistant: I see. Let me take a message.

In this scenario, who the assistant was leading the conversation. And as long as the assistant is leading, you lose. You must lead the conversation at all times. But let me stress one point: never lie. That doesn't mean you tell the whole truth. You just don't give false information. Ever.

A strong salesperson:

Here's how to send the gatekeeper back so many times that the CEO finally gets fed up and tells her to put the call through. You might even considering having a contest to see how many times you can send the gatekeeper back to the CEO you're trying to reach.

You: Hi. This is Bill Johnston. I'm calling for Carl. Is he in?

[Notice that the assistant can't ask my name, I've given it. Important people give their names. And I didn't ask, "How are you today?"]

Assistant: Can I ask what this call is in reference to?

You: Just tell him it's Bill Johnston.

[The assistant goes to Carl and tells him it's Bill Johnston. The boss says, "What's it about?" The assistant says: "He didn't say. It sounded like he knew you." The boss tells the assistant to get more information.]

Assistant: I'm sorry. Can you tell me what this is in reference to?

You: Did you tell him it's Bill Johnston?

Assistant: Yes. He didn't seem to know you.

You: Hmm. Just tell him I'm from XYZ Company. That might jog his memory.

[Remember to keep the tone of authority. That keeps assistants off-guard. They don't know if they have any power over you yet. The minute you start sounding like a salesperson, you give them that power and they will wield it well. You must keep them off-balance.]

The assistant goes to the boss again, expecting that he might know you. You didn't say he would. You said the name of your company might jog his memory. Ideally, you will have sent a letter in advance with very little information. Even if it gets thrown out, it still gives you the liberty to act like he might remember you, your company name, or the purpose of your call.

The boss says he doesn't know the name and sends the assistant back to you once again.

Assistant: I'm sorry. Mr. Johnston, but the company name didn't ring any bells. Can you please tell me what this is in reference to?

You: Who am I speaking to?

[You take control of the conversation.]

Assistant: This is his assistant.

You: Are you his regular assistant?

Assistant: Yes.

You: What's your name?

Assistant: Shirley.

[We want to get as much info as possible from every call. Not only are you taking control, but you're taking impeccable records and gain more information from every call you make.]

You: Shirley, if you tell Carl that I'm following up on some correspondence sent to him, that should be enough.

Be clear that a top executive is not afraid to take your call. And most are rescuers. They will just say: "Put him through. I'll handle this."

Often by this point the CEO comes to the phone just to have the assistant stop coming back to him. He will be gruff, a little impatient. That means that the first words out of your mouth have to be sharp and to the point and sound important.

Whatever you do, don't turn into a salesperson and ask him, "How are you today?" That screams, "Salesperson!"

Maintain your authority. And have a fantastic two-minute opening worked out, like a script following the educational approach I teach. Be clever, be confident (that's key), and know that your tone of voice has five times more impact on their perception than the actual words you use.
